We couldn’t be more proud of our instructors who, even in their limited interactions with youth at their sites, have still managed to make a difference this year.
Gabriel (Capoeira Instructor, Orphanage Adonai, Chihuahua, Mexico) speaks of his most advanced student, David:
‘Some of the adolescents got the idea to go beyond their training, beyond their own learning. David likes teaching the children, so when I teach classes I have him help me. I give him a group, the material and the exercise and that way he is learning how to teach. It’s a whole other world to learn and then to teach. If they had their own material it would really serve them well as they could train amongst themselves when I’m not there. They are quite disciplined, they don’t break things, only the little kids do that.’
Gabriel and other Mentor a Mentor instructors' consistency and dedication have made a notable impact on the youth they work with. Although Mentor a Mentor’s sites have predominantly been in lockdown in 2020 we have continued to support our instructors, and the children they work with know that they will be back as soon as they are able. Mentor a Mentor’s work is funded 100% by donations and all of the funds raised go directly to the work our instructors are doing in northern Mexico.
