A Blessed Fall in Chihuahua

This fall has been exciting for Mentor a Mentor as we (Javier and Rebecca) were there with the instructors and the children they are teaching in Chihuahua! While Gabriel continued his capoeira classes at Orphanage Adonai, a new set of classes began with Restore in October. Not only is Restore a new site we are working with (see here to learn more about the amazing work they do), we also added a new instructor to work with them!

Every other Friday children at Restore take courses with Mentor a Mentor Instructors. Seven children from Restore have begun training racquetball with Nancy, a professional racquetball athlete who is currently ranked 11th out of female racquetball players internationally. We had the joy of hosting Nancy in Minneapolis while she was here to play in the Racquetball US open the first week of October. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect as she shared with us her desire to use her gifts as an athlete to be a blessing to others. So far the children at Restore are loving their time with Nancy!

Simultaneously five girls from Restore have begun to take sewing classes with our instructor, Cruz, in her workshop. Cruz lit up as soon as her classes began with the girls and their attention never once wavered from their instructor! The girls have begun learning basic stitches by hand, how to take measurements and even use of the sewing machine as they prepare to soon learn to make garments. The girls dream of making formal gowns like their instructor Cruz, but are patient as they realize they need the basics first! We hope these skills will benefit them and even offer options for employment in the future.

If you would like to consider donating, funds go directly towards our instructors’ wage for the amazing work they are doing with these children. Further supplies will also soon be needed as the girls continue to sew and require fabric and material for their projects, as well as proper equipment for the children taking racquetball classes.

Thank you so much for your support! Check out pictures below and please stay tuned for the next update-another brand new Mentor a Mentor site and instructor began last week in Juarez!
